Monday 22.08.2022 - Thursday 25.08.2022
an International Summer School
organized by the
Dresden Center for Intelligent Materials (DCIM)
Innovative materials are one of the key technologies for keeping products and industrial processes economically competitive and ecologically sustainable. Modern materials science requires a multi-discipline approach
embracing chemistry, physics, engineering, as well as data science.
The DRESDEN-concept Summer School Dimensions of Intelligence in Materials 2022 will be held from 22.08. to 25.08. in Dresden. In the 4 days of the event, we show the different aspects of materials that are called "intelligent": These materials may be performing intrinsic computations, they may self-assemble, they may, for example, have sensor and actuator capabilities, or they may be parts of larger systems to enhance functionality.
We will be approaching the subject starting from the lab-scale and the fabrication approaches for intelligent materials. Then, we will show how simulation, modeling and design can help to bridge the gap to applications. Finally, we will look at the application scale and how we can integrate intelligent materials into working systems.
The application time ended on June 15th. Thank you very much for the numerous and excellent applications!
On every day, there will be an introductory keynote by
an internationally renowned scientist. Then, there will be lectures by the members of our Dresden Center for Intelligent
Materials (www.dcim.science/people) about the subjects of the day. They will give
a beginner-friendly introduction to their specific methods of their field. In
the afternoon, other DCIM members will give insights with contributed talks into cutting-edge research about their types of intelligent
materials. On the end of the days, we will visit
our member institutes in Dresden, where intelligent materials are
researched: The IPF Dresden, the Helmholtz-Center Dresden Rossendorf
and the TU Dresden. There will also be the possibility for an optional conference dinner at the Schillergarten Dresden (Self-service area, ask for DCIM). The final day will close with a plenary discussion about the
different dimensions of intelligence in materials and, optionally, a guided tour at the Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden.

Applications will be accepted until June 15th. The summer school targets Master students and early PhD students
working on or interested in computational and experimental materials science and topics related to synthesis, modelling and integration of
intelligent/smart/active materials, novel fabrication methods and high-throughput methods.
To apply for the school the following documents are needed (and have to be uploaded as a PDF in the online form.
The summer school will take place
in Technische Sammlungen Dresden.
